Year in review with Ray Hargreaves.
I was quite excited to have Ray on again, though the format this year bares no resemblance to our first interview (a.k.a. the one where I’m terrible).? It turned out to be quite a bit longer than I had expected, but I’m so convinced that you’ll love it, that if you don’t, I’ll burn all my NiGHTS merchandise.*
Upon further thought, I feel that Sonic wasn’t nearly as quiet as I stated.? We did get two Sonic games (even though one was awful and the other was a sports game with Mario).? The Sega marketing engine is pushing full-steam-ahead on SSASR with possibilities of Toe Jam & Earl, NiGHTS, and Banjo Kazooie arising.? We’ve just found out about a new collection on DS, and a possible new collection on PS3.? And heck, Needlemouse.? Despite the complete lack of information on it, it was still announced.? I suppose it wasn’t a great year for Sonic, but it certainly wasn’t a quiet year.
I still stand by my statement that Sega is inconsistent with their “Sonic is for kids” attitude, but it brings up an even more important crisis with modern Sonic: his identity as a game.? If you follow the series from Sonic Adventure through Black Knight, you’d likely have a hard time deciphering the evolution.? Just as we can’t tell what Sega wants to do with Sonic, I’m concerned that Sega itself isn’t clear on how to approach him each time.? Going back to our Secret Rings episode, Ray’s discussion on starting with a simple mechanic and then expanding feels very much like how the ideas of Secret Rings were expanded to produce Sonic Unleashed’s daytime stages.? Will Sega continue this trend?? I can hope, but historically, Sega’s not well known for refining established concepts before starting new ones.

*The only NiGHTS merchandise I have is the Wii game, and I have no intentions of burning it.

I’d say that this time around was much better. Rather than Question-Answer-Question it was more of a casual conversation about certain topics.

Yeah I agree BadnikHunter it was better. I have to tell the truth and say that when Ray came on in Act: 7 I didn’t really care for his opions but I liked the way he handled and ansewers everything. I also like his sence on humor…I almost thought he didn’t have one but I was wrong an I enjoyed it! (Goes to iTunes and saves the Act.)

I’m also agreeing with Badnik. The casual chat works way better, and it flowed better.
